Let’s face it. The name itself brings to mind politics. As with any club with the affiliation to political parties, KUAM itself isn’t necessarily free from the controversies that surround the politics of its namesake.
Restructuring the image of KUAM was a conscious choice made by our president and supported by the committee; a much needed move to rebrand, if you must, KUAM as a club that would be more appealing to the general Malaysian community in Melbourne.
KUAMuniti, the catchphrase spearheaded by the committee of 2008.
Why KUAMuniti indeed?
Let’s not skirt the facts. Only Malays are able to be KUAM members.
In addition, there is a certain stigma about being Malay as well, a stereotype of laziness and unmotivation, of ignorance and narrow-mindedness. In this day and age, it is difficult to move forward with such a stereotype.
That’s where KUAM aims to come in.
The tagline ‘KUAMuniti’ very much encompasses the mission and vision of the club this year, a club that aims to refine its activities to appeal to a larger audience, a platform to unite Malays and Malaysians alike, irrespective of age or background. Even though our members are only Malays, our activities are open to all Malaysians.
That is our vision: Unity.
In addition, KUAM aims to show the community that we, as Malays, are able to lead as well as the next person. We aim to prove that there is a new generation, we aim to herald in an age where the stereotype is challenged, and hopefully, we will be able to lead by example, and establish a standard of leadership that will be upheld, and improved on in future years.
So here’s to KUAMuniti.
And here’s to the future.
